English Language Services
Language Instruction for English Learners and Immigrant Students
Vision
Middlesex County STEM Charter School provides English Language Services for its students who are identified and assessed as MLs. This program will ensure that Multilingual Learners (MLs) receive curriculum standards and language support to achieve high levels of academic success.
Objectives
- Create equity of opportunity for students.
- Give access to all content and curriculum.
- Increase the linguistic and academic abilities of students.
- Set students up for success.
- Give students a positive feeling of achievement.
- Provide for parent/family involvement so that they may participate in the education of their MLs.
- Provide equitable access to district programs and services, including special education and gifted/talented education.
Instruction
Our ML program meets daily to provide students with additional language instruction. Instruction is differentiated based on each student’s English language proficiency (ELP), and incorporates cultural aspects of students’ experiences. Instruction aligns with NJ learning standards, WIDA Language Development Framework, and practices recommended for Sheltered English Instruction.
Progress
- The student’s readiness to communicate in English shall be assessed based on the WIDA English Language Development Standards Framework. Every spring, ML students participate in the ACCESS for ELLs assessment to establish the students' English level of proficiency (ELP) in the four domains of language: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Other ELP data indicators include:
- classroom performance.
- academic discussions.
- formative and summative assessments.
- the student’s English language proficiency.
- the student’s reading level in English.
- performance on standardized achievement tests in English.
